Company Completes Another Training Class

By Firefighter/EMT Bill Dill
March 24, 2007

On Saturday March 24th, 2007, several members of the Sadsburyville Fire Company completed a 24 hour Hazardous Materials Operations Class. The Pomeroy Fire Company was hosting the class and several members traveled down to take advantage of the close course being offered. Chief (Supplee) who already had the course took it with his firefighters as a refresher and to show that even the white helmets need updated training every once in a while.

In this class members had learned a lot of material from being able to read placards on the side of trailers to being able to handle small spills. The class was very informative for the guys, which gave them some things to think about for their local district and of what might be traveling their roadways. It's crazy to think what dangers a simple UPS or Fed Express truck might be carrying. By participating in this class, it helps you to better understand those dangers and what resources are available for the responders should an emergency happen.

The hands on part of the class involved everyone going across the street of the Sadsburyville Fire Company where the instructors had scenarios setup for the students. One station was where the students had to build an underflow along with a damn. The other station involved the students using dykes to help stop the spread of any gas that might be in a make shift pond. All scenarios were completed successfully and the students were then debriefed on anything that they learned for the class and also if they had any questions.

Due to another Hazardous Materials Class being conducted at the same time the guys and girls of the class will have to wait one month to go and challenge the National test so both classes can be tested at the same time if successful we will have 9 more members Nationally Certified in Hazardous Materials Operations. The Sadsburyville Fire Company would like to thank the Pomeroy Fire Company for letting our members participate in the class and also to the other companies being represented, the Berwyn and West Whiteland Fire Companies. Everyone enjoyed their selves and had a wonderful learning experience.
