By Firefighter/EMT John Sly
October 13, 2008

On Monday October 13th, 2008 at 1459 hours the Sadsburyville Fire Company and, due to day time response procedures in Sadsbury Township, an Engine from the Pomeroy Fire Company were dispatched for an outside gas leak in the area of Aim Boulevard and Lincoln Highway in front of the Bel Aire Industrial Park. Evidently there was construction going on in this area and a back hoe accidentally hit a gas line underneath of the ground causing a constant flow of natural gas out of the ground.

Engine 31-2 and Deputy Chief Reynolds arrived on location and established Lincoln Highway Command. After confirming the problem of the gas PECO Energy was notified in order to have the gas shut off and the pipe repaired.

In addition, Lincoln Highway Command requested a 1st Alarm Fire Police Task Force to be struck bringing multiple fire police units from the area to shut down Lincoln Highway between Washington Lane and Old Wilmington Road.

During this process a motorcycle accident also occurred at Old Wilmington Road and Lincoln Highway. Battalion Chief Grossman canceled the fire department response at that location however had Ambulance 29-2 and QRS 31 proceed in to evaluate the patients. One subject was transported to a local facility by Ambulance 29-2.

The roadway was shut down for approximately 2-1/2 hours until the problem was fixed and all units cleared the scene.

Units: Engine 31-2 and QRS 31

Mutual Aid: Pomeroy Engine 29-5, Ambulance 29-1 and Ambulance 29-2, Westwood Traffic 44, Parkesburg Fire Police, Wagontown Squad 35, Thorndale Traffic 38, Gap Lancaster Squad 4-2
