On Wednesday July 27th, 2016 at 1222 hours, the Sadsburyville Fire Company and Cochranville Fire Company were dispatched to assist the Keystone Valley Fire Department on an odor of gas outside in the 100 block of West First Avenue in Parkesburg Borough. Engine 31-1 with a crew of 6 led by Chief Grossman made the response at 1227.

Arriving at 1232 Engine 08-1 and Engine 31-1 began investigating an odor of gas outside in the area of the Family Dollar. Crews interviewed civilians and they reported the smell of a methane type gas somewhere in the shopping center, especially in the area of the drainage grates. Engine 27-2 and crew arrived next and staged in the manpower pool.

In addition, firefighters checked the area businesses to assure there were no odors of anything inside of them. After 5 minutes of investigating, Safety 8 established West First Avenue Command and placed the situation under control, requesting a representative of the sewer company respond to check the smell.
