| On Wednesday July 2nd, 2008 at 02:03 hours the Sadsburyville and Parkesburg Fire Companies were dispatched to assist the Pomeroy Fire Company in the 1900 block of Valley Road, just a block from the Pomeroy Fire Station, for the reports of a house on fire. Chief Supplee was the first to arrive at 02:07 hours and reported a working house fire. Pomeroy Deputy Chief Taylor arrived and established Valley Road Command which was later turned over to Pomeroy Chief Sellers. Engine 31-2 was the second arriving engine and advanced a second line, first line in the front door, to the second floor to check for extensions. Crews encountered heavy fire conditions in the attic. Crews began opening up the ceiling of the second floor to expose the fire for extinguishing. The Sadsburyville EMS Division established a rehab area in front of the structure with Westwood EMS personnel and Medic 93. Fortunately the occupants of the house were able to escape the house before the smoke and flames succumbed them. Upon arrival of Chief Supplee two civilians from the house were climbing out of a second story window using a life ladder. Both victims were transported to Brandywine Hospital for smoke inhalation and related injuries. Quick thinking and great preparedness on their part with using the life ladder. Firefighter Zwick suffered a minor ankle injury and was transported to Brandywine Hospital for further evaluation. Deputy Chief Reynolds suffered from cardiac related problems and was also transported to Brandywine Hospital for further evaluation. Both persons were released that morning and are back to full duty. Sadsburyville crews remained on the scene for quite some time assisting with salvage and overhaul of the structure. Sadsburyville fielded 13 volunteers for the morning. Thank you to the Honey Brook Fire Company for standing by in our station in case any other emergencies were to arise while we were out assisting the public. |
