Fire Company Receives Federal Grant

By Assistant Chief Adam Grossman
February 19, 2010

On Friday, February 19th, 2010 the Sadsburyville Fire Company received official notification from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Department of Homeland Security that we have been selected to receive a grant in the amount of $22,400.

This is the first Federal grant we have ever received after numerous years of failed applications, so it is a very exciting time in our Company history.

With this funding, we will be purchasing new personal protective equipment for our firefighters. Many of our firefighters are wearing gear that is extremely worn and outdated, and others are wearing "hand me down" gear that does not properly fit, causing many safety concerns.

The cost to outfit a single firefighter in structural firefighting gear, which includes a coat, pants, boots, gloves, and a helmet is approximately $2,300. We intend to purchase 10 sets of personal protective equipment.

The Fire Company also has to provide a 5% matching funds portion of the grant, which is $1,120. We will then receive a Federal Share of $21,280. We will use funds generated by our Bingo fundraisers to offset the matching funds request and any minor additional charges we incur over the grant amount.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is administered by the department's Directorate for Preparedness through its Office of Grants and Training in cooperation with the United States Fire Administration, also a division of the Preparedness Directorate.

We would like to thank Firefighter/EMT Sly for his assistance with this application and all those involved in this program for the assistance we are provided with this grant.
